English progression in EYFS

Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception)

Children in Reception develop a love of reading and writing via immersion in both traditional and modern classic children’s literature.  Reception children begin to talk about these stories before developing the ability to remember them through reading, acting out and recreating them through co-operative play.  Phonic sessions develop their ability to use letter sound correspondence and write simple words and sentences independently in response to these stories or other learning stimulus (see phonics above in the main information about English for expected progress in phonics and the programme followed with Read, Write, Inc.)
